When your child spontaneously grows a black eye, go to the hospital!

Brett gave the low-down on our little episode that happened last week, I just thought I would give a follow up. Our sweet little Eleanor is doing much better, the swelling in her eye is almost completely gone and her infection is hopefully all cleared up. She is still on antibiotics but she seems to enjoy taking them! As you can all see, this 13.5 lb baby doesn't mind eating!

We were so lucky to have had my dad and brothers to help with telling us what to do. I am still amazed it only took a picture I texted my dad for him to know I needed to get our little baby to the hospital immediately and exactly what to tell the ER to get us in fast. It turns out Eleanor had pre septic cellulitis which is basically a staff infection that manifested itself in her eye. The dangerous part would have been if the infection had spread to other parts of her body like her brain and spinal cord, joints, etc that would have killed her.

I think the scariest part was that everything happened within 45 minutes. It makes me sick to think what would've happened had we not been close to the hospital. When Eleanor woke up from her nap around 5 she felt a little warm and her eye seemed to have gotten a little bigger. 45 minutes later her eye was completely swollen shut, she was running a temperature of 103.5, and she was having a hard time breathing. It was pretty scary holding my panting, shivering baby in my arms. I texted my dad a picture of her eye and all he said was get her to the hospital now. I can't tell you how blessed I feel to have had Brett's parents visiting and be able to take me to the hospital. I don't think I would've been able to make it there without them.

Eleanor is doing great now, eating, pooping, smiling, and cooing. She actually gained weight while in the hospital and is getting back into her old routines now that she's home. I'm so grateful for antibiotics! Our little baby would be dead without them...literally... Now we just have to worry about Brett finishing his classes and preparing for the DAT he's taking in 2.5 weeks!! Wish him luck!

  1. Holy cow! Scary! Way to be a trooper, Steph. It's so hard to have to take your baby into the hospital. I'm so glad she is doing better... Poor little girl! She is so beautiful though, even with her eye completely swollen shut. She has the most beautiful blue eyes... Well, eye. :)

DAT? Wow, dental school! Good luck!

  2. So glad my little niece is doing better. I love that she managed to gain weight while sick at the hospital- that ability to thrive during hard times will come in handy.
