Steph and I have been looking for an apartment here in Lima and have received a little bit of help from the HR department.
Yesterday we loaded into the hotel bus and went with two HR employees to meet our real estate agent. We met her at the first apartment and when we saw her first selection we knew we were in trouble.
The first thing we noticed was the smell. The second thing we noticed was that the apartment had the same furniture as my grandma's house. The third thing we noticed was the master bed was as big as the twin bed I used in college. Notice how we didn't notice anything good about this apartment (This was the theme of the day).
The second apartment we saw was only from the outside. Steph and I didn't even want to see the inside after seeing the outside. The same thing happened with the third and fourth apartments.
We were reluctant to see the fifth apartment, but it was right on the beach so we thought we at least check it out. As we walked into the apartment our first thought was that it wasn't too bad. Our next thought after we saw the crappy carpet upstairs was no, no, and more no. To make things worse, the agent didn't know exact prices or utility prices. I felt like Dwight Shrewt from the office when he said, "Why would I tip some one to do a job I am perfectly capable of doing."
As you have probably guessed we didn't find an apartment. We didn't even come close to finding an apartment, which means our life must continue in the hotel (Which really isn't bad at all). We do have some good leads that we have found on our own and we have declined more help from the same agent and will continue to decline help unless we become desperate. On the bright side, we did get to know the streets and back alleys of Lima so if we ever get in a sticky situation with the police we should be able to have a clean get-a-way.
