Right now I am staying in a hotel near the coast and live about 15-20 minutes from the church I attend. It is easy to travel Sunday mornings because traffic is scarce and the majority of taxi drivers can easily drive to the church because it is next to the temple.
The problem I have run into is deciding how much effort to put into the conversation. I like to ask them questions about Lima and its history. I want to know where to find museums, theaters, libraries, and places to hike, swim, or surf (I don't really surf, at least not yet). The problem I've noticed as I ask these questions is the driver puts more effort into his answers than his actual driving.
This morning the taxi driver literally drove down the middle of two lanes for half of the 20 minute drive. This includes the freeway and one of the busiest streets in the city of Lima. I find myself constantly saying in my head "Ahhh, ahhh, there is a car, there is a car, phewwwww! Disaster avoided...for now."
I'm not sure if less conversation will translate into safer driving, but I think I'll give it a try.
You really need to get a motorcycle.
